On al-Muizz Street, Qalawun’s complex brought together education, medical care, worship and royal remembrance. Sultan al-Mansur Qalawun established it in the 1280s with a madrasa, hospital and mausoleum, helping turn this part of Mamluk Cairo into a concentration of major institutions.
Beyond the long street façade, passages and interiors change the scale around you. Marble, columns and ornament draw the eye upwards in the mausoleum, while the hospital’s history recalls the people the complex once served. Its story extends beyond an impressive tomb to the relationship between learning, care and power.
Entrance and tickets: One combined ticket covers the Al-Muizz monuments; buy it by card at the window opposite the Qalawun Complex.
Nearest metro: Bab El-Shaaria
The best route depends on your starting point. Navigate to Al-Muizz Street, Bayn al-Qasrayn, Cairo; for Historic Cairo sites, expect to walk the final part through narrow streets.
A walk through the heart of Fatimid Cairo, from its northern gate to its southern one: mosques, sabils, houses and markets along a single street. Best from late afternoon into sunset, and special on Ramadan nights.
