The story of this place

Museum · Modern

At his Nile-side home in Giza, Ahmed Shawqi left a presence that can be approached beyond the pages of his poetry. He named the house Karmat Ibn Hani in reference to Abu Nuwas. It opened as a museum in 1977, preserving aspects of his life, possessions and literary memory.

Furniture, photographs, papers and personal belongings bring the poet into the scale of everyday life. Rather than stopping at his title, “Prince of Poets”, the visit connects him with his period. The house and garden give a physical setting to a figure usually encountered through words.
