Beside the Nile on Gezira, al-Andalus Garden builds its character around a carefully arranged plan. Mohamed Bey Zulfiqar created it in 1935, combining a southern section inspired by Andalusian gardens with a northern section drawing on ancient Egyptian motifs.
Terraces, paths and a rectangular pool organise the southern section, while ornament, seating and a pavilion give it the character of an extended courtyard. Walking from one axis to another reveals the design gradually. Beyond its composed spaces, the river keeps the garden connected to the movement of the surrounding city.
The best route depends on your starting point. Navigate to El-Gezira Street, near Qasr al-Nil Bridge, Cairo; for Historic Cairo sites, expect to walk the final part through narrow streets.
An easy family outing in the city centre: a Nile-side garden, the Cairo Tower, Mokhtar’s sculptures and the Fish Garden grottoes children love. Ideal for weekends and Eid.
