The story of this place

Archaeological site · Fatimid · Built 1087

Badr al-Jamali built Bab al-Futuh in 1087 as part of the stone walls that expanded Fatimid Cairo. Replacing an earlier gateway, it controlled entry and helped protect a city whose walls once marked a clear boundary with the land beyond.

Two rounded towers flank the entrance, while thick walls and a deep passage reveal the defensive structure behind its carved details. Today the gate forms part of a walk through historic Cairo. Passing towards al-Muizz makes it easier to imagine a city that has grown far beyond its walls while retaining this recognisable entrance.
