Bab al-Nasr stands on the northern side of Fatimid Cairo, within the walls Badr al-Jamali built in 1087. Its position shifted as the city expanded, but the earlier name remained in use despite an official attempt to rename it.
Square towers distinguish it from the rounded towers of nearby Bab al-Futuh, while carved shields emphasise its defensive character. From a distance, the gate reads as a solid stone mass; closer inspection reveals the carving and construction. Seeing both gateways helps turn an isolated monument into part of a wider system built to protect the city.
