Cairo Tower was completed in 1961 to a design by architect Naoum Shebib, rising 187 metres on Gezira. Its lattice-like form draws on the lotus flower, giving a modern structure a visual connection with Egyptian heritage. Over time, it became a familiar marker on the capital’s skyline.
From the viewing platform, the city changes scale: islands separate from the riverbanks and bridges become links between distinct areas. Visibility depends on the weather, but the essential experience is reading Cairo from above, then recognising at street level places first encountered within that much wider view.
The best route depends on your starting point. Navigate to Cairo Tower Street, Gezira, Zamalek, Cairo; for Historic Cairo sites, expect to walk the final part through narrow streets.
An easy family outing in the city centre: a Nile-side garden, the Cairo Tower, Mokhtar’s sculptures and the Fish Garden grottoes children love. Ideal for weekends and Eid.
