The story of this place

Market · Ottoman · Built 1600

Beyond Bab Zuwayla, Khayamiya Street is associated with the historic Qasaba of Radwan and a textile craft built from layers. Makers stitch coloured fabric shapes onto a cloth ground to form patterns and images, extending a tradition linked with tents and ceremonial hangings into panels and household pieces.

Finished textiles hang beside small workshops along the commercial passage. Close viewing reveals cut edges, stitches and overlapping layers that disappear from a distance. Work varies between shops, and any making you see depends on what the artisans are doing when you arrive.
