On Bab al-Wazir Street, Khayrbak’s complex links the late Mamluk period with the beginning of Ottoman rule. Its patron had a Mamluk background before becoming Egypt’s first Ottoman governor in 1517. His buildings stood beside an older palace, forming an ensemble shaped by successive periods.
The setting includes a mosque, mausoleum, public fountain and school, alongside residential remains. Conservation has recovered important parts of that fabric. Its character comes from relationships between buildings and street: moving through the ensemble gives an architectural perspective on a major political transition within a neighbourhood that continued to be inhabited.
