Naguib Mahfouz’s museum opened in 2019 inside the Muhammad Bey Abu al-Dhahab complex, close to districts central to his fictional world. Personal belongings, photographs and documents give his biography a home within the Cairo he repeatedly reimagined.
The displays move between writing, daily life and recognition, while reading and cultural spaces extend the museum beyond a collection of possessions. Outside, the surrounding streets offer context for his work. They help explain the world he observed without turning every fictional episode into a documented event at a particular address.
