In Harrania, Ramses Wissa Wassef established his arts centre in the 1950s with a belief in children’s creative abilities. Weavers learned to work without copying prepared designs, allowing familiar fields, birds and village houses to enter their tapestries.
That approach extends into the buildings, whose domes, arches and materials connect them to their rural setting. Here, weaving records ways of observing everyday life, while architecture supports the process of learning and making. The centre brings handwork, imagination and the surrounding landscape into a relationship you can trace through both textiles and buildings.
