The story of this place

Archaeological site · Pharaonic · Built 1950 BC

Senusret I’s obelisk in Matariya is a surviving marker of ancient Iunu, known to the Greeks as Heliopolis and closely associated with sun worship. Erected under the Twelfth Dynasty king, it remains in place while most of the city that surrounded it has disappeared.

Within modern Cairo, the obelisk offers a fixed point from which to imagine a much older landscape. Its inscriptions and rising stone form reward close observation, but absence also shapes the experience: a single monument helps evoke a religious and intellectual centre whose ancient appearance no longer survives.
