The story of this place

Mosque · Mamluk · Built 1474

Sultan Qaitbay established his complex in Cairo’s Mamluk cemetery between 1472 and 1474. Its madrasa, mausoleum, public fountain and elementary school brought learning, water, worship and burial together beyond the city’s main commercial centre.

The carved stone dome attracts attention before you enter, sharing the exterior composition with the minaret and façade. Inside, iwans, woodwork and ornament continue the careful handling of detail. Moving between exterior and interior reveals different ways of working with materials, from stone carving exposed to daylight to features that require a closer, slower look.
