The story of this place

Historic house · Mamluk · Built 1504

Wikalat al-Ghuri was built to receive both goods and the merchants who brought them. Founded by Sultan Qansuh al-Ghuri in the early sixteenth century, it arranged storage below and residential units above an open courtyard, making commerce and lodging part of one building.

Repeated arches, windows and wooden screens help distinguish those former uses. Cultural performances have added a later chapter, according to an announced programme. By day, the courtyard reveals the building’s organisation; during an event, the same space becomes a setting for movement and sound.
