The story of this place

Mosque · Mamluk · Built 1421

Beside Bab Zuweila, Sultan al-Muayyad Shaykh built his mosque between 1415 and 1421 on the site of Khizanat Shama’il prison. Historical accounts connect the project to his own imprisonment there and a vow to establish a mosque if his circumstances changed. The story gives the site’s transformation a personal dimension.

Its minarets rise from the Fatimid gateway’s towers, while the interior opens around a courtyard with arcades, marble and woodwork. From the street, mosque and gate form a single composition; inside, the space of worship separates from the movement continuing beyond its walls.
