Zamalek’s Aquarium Grotto Garden was established under Khedive Ismail in the nineteenth century, when new gardens and building projects were reshaping the island. Its artificial grotto incorporated passages and recesses for fish tanks within a cave-like landscape.
The garden can be read today as a historic landscape design, with trees, constructed rock formations and changing openings and shade. Its name alone should not be taken as a promise of a fully operating aquarium. The condition and availability of the tanks need checking, while the grotto remains central to understanding the garden’s original concept.
The best route depends on your starting point. Navigate to El-Gabalaya Street, Zamalek, Cairo; for Historic Cairo sites, expect to walk the final part through narrow streets.
An easy family outing in the city centre: a Nile-side garden, the Cairo Tower, Mokhtar’s sculptures and the Fish Garden grottoes children love. Ideal for weekends and Eid.
