The Arab Music Institute grew from a music club founded by Mustafa Bey Reda in 1914, with its purpose-built home opening in the 1920s. It hosted the 1932 Congress of Arab Music, linking the building to a significant effort to study, document and teach the region’s musical traditions.
A theatre and music-related collections, including the Mohamed Abdel Wahab Museum, connect instruments and personal histories with performance. Now associated with the Cairo Opera House, the institute offers different ways into musical heritage. Access to particular sections and the experience of a live performance depend on the available programme.
The best route depends on your starting point. Navigate to 22 Ramses Street, Downtown Cairo; for Historic Cairo sites, expect to walk the final part through narrow streets.
For lovers of the golden age: from the home of the Prince of Poets Ahmed Shawki, to Umm Kulthum’s museum in Manial, the Arab Music Institute and Naguib Mahfouz’s world near al-Azhar, ending with a Tanoura night at Wikalat al-Ghouri.
