Under Khedive Ismail, the seat of government moved from the Citadel to Abdeen, bringing the palace into the heart of the Cairo he was reshaping. Construction began in 1863. Over time, collections connected with official life became the basis of museums within the palace grounds.
Arms, medals, silverware, documents and diplomatic gifts reveal how authority expressed itself through objects used, exchanged and preserved. The visit focuses on these museum collections; it does not automatically include every palace interior. Abdeen’s history emerges through the displays and the routes available to visitors.
