Al-Muizz follows a main axis of the city founded by the Fatimids in the tenth century, running between Bab al-Futuh and Bab Zuwayla. Cairo kept growing around it: Mamluk and Ottoman patrons added mosques, schools, public fountains and houses, leaving centuries of architecture along one route.
As you walk, historic facades share the scene with shops and daily business. A richly carved frontage may lead into a sheltered courtyard before you return to the market. That movement between monument and working street is central to the experience of al-Muizz.
