About this place

The Mahmoud Khalil Museum occupies a Nile-side palace in Giza built in 1915 and once home to statesman and art collector Mahmoud Khalil and his wife, Emiline Hector Luce. The collection passed to the Egyptian state through the family’s bequest in the mid-twentieth century, turning the residence into a museum that preserves a close relationship between the artworks and the world of their collectors.

Its holdings include major nineteenth- and early twentieth-century European paintings, especially Impressionist and related schools, together with sculpture, ceramics, tapestries, decorative arts and Asian objects. The museum is also associated with the Horizon One gallery for temporary exhibitions. After a long closure and redevelopment, it reopened to the public in 2021.

The collection is experienced inside the collector’s own palace, making Mahmoud Khalil’s taste and the history of collecting part of the interpretation of the art.
