The story of this place

Archaeological site · Pharaonic · Built 2650 BC

At Saqqara, you can follow the moment the pyramid took shape. Built in the Third Dynasty, Djoser’s complex transformed stacked stone mastabas into the Step Pyramid, an architectural turning point associated with Imhotep. It stands within a much larger cemetery that served Memphis across many centuries.

Beyond the enclosure and columned entrance, royal courts open towards the desert. Elsewhere in the necropolis, tomb decoration records work, food and ordinary life. The visit moves between architecture intended to sustain a king for eternity and small details that bring his wider world into focus.
