Al-Azhar Park was created from accumulated rubble rather than inherited as an old green space. Opened in 2005 through an Aga Khan initiative, the project revealed sections of the Ayyubid wall and became connected with conservation and community work in neighbouring Darb al-Ahmar.
Paths, terraces, water features and planting spread across raised ground, bringing Cairo’s domes and minarets into view from changing angles. As you walk or sit, the skyline becomes part of the garden, helping you place individual monuments within the wider city.
