Amir Altinbugha al-Maridani built his mosque in al-Darb al-Ahmar in 1340, during a flourishing period of Mamluk architecture. Behind the façade, an open courtyard organises the building, while marble, woodwork and ornament give particular attention to the prayer side.
Rehabilitation completed in 2024 brought important features back into view after years of deterioration. The visit offers both an encounter with the mosque’s craftsmanship and a chance to see how conservation helps a historic building remain legible. The wooden screen and mihrab reward a closer look after the courtyard’s broader view.
